FRITZ BREITHAUPT

Johns Hopkins, PhD 1997. Professor Germanic Studies, Affiliated Faculty Cognitive Science, Adjunct Professor Comparative Literature.

Fritz Breithaupt is Provost Professor at Indiana University Bloomington. He is the director of graduate studies in Cognitive Science. His research focuses on empathy and narrative thinking.

His latest book Das narrative Gehirn (The Narrative Brain) is the Science Book of the Year 2023 in Austria. Recent publications include his books Die Kultur der Empathie (Cultures of Empathy), The Dark Sides of Empathy, and an article on "Quantifying the retention of emotions across story retellings" in Nature Scientific Reports.

Breithaupt is a frequent contributor to the press, including NPR, BBC, SRF, Die Zeit, and Philosophie Magazin.
